| Introducing Tony Billet |
| and the "Sod Man III" dragster |

|
Featured ride: The Sod Man III dragster Tony Billet from Billet Landscaping in Boardman has a dozen trips down the blacktop and is on his way to challenge for a spot in IHRA Division I Top Dragster.
Two years ago Billet was featured in the Town Crier with a wild 27 Chevy Roadster that he took to the third spot in the IHRA Division I Super Rod class last year. The roadster took over for Billet's 72 Nova he ran the prior year and still has. When he finished the roadster and began to run it, he found it ran better and helped put him up to number 3. (Billet finished the 04 season at number 7 in Div. I Super Rod.)
In July last year, Billet's roadster was chosen as the feature car for the Las Vegas 100th Anniversary. His car was on display in the city, but it was after it was loaded on the trailer that tragedy struck. Someone high-jacked the truck, trailer and Billet's winning machine. The truck and trailer were found a week later in the desert, minus the roadster.
Billet never gave up and went back to the Nova to finish the season, but it wasn't the same and he fell to 18th.
The roadster never surfaced and Billet looked at building a new ride for 2006.
"I have a lot of friends that run dragsters," he said. "They always tell me that if I wanted to run a real car that real cars don't have doors."
He made the decision to go with a Top Dragster. Over the winter he completed the "Sod Man III" Top Dragster. He went to Florida for the initial run and to obtain his dragster license. As of this month, he has made 12 runs in Sod Man III, turning in an elapsed time of 7.11 seconds at 190 miles per hour.
Earlier in April he took it to Budd's Creek, Maryland in the eighth mile and dialed in a 4.56, but ran a 4.54 in the first round.
"I'm still a beginner in Top Dragster," he said.
He plans on running the Sod Man III at Quaker City Raceway next weekend (05.06.2006) and hopes to work his way into the top ten. |
